B Lab invites you and all stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft B Impact Assessment Version 5, now available for public comment from October 26th to November 25th. Through this feedback, you will help us make the assessment a more powerful tool to assess, compare, and improve the social and environmental performance of its 36,000 and growing users.

The B Impact Assessment is updated every two years to incorporate user feedback, improve clarity and content, and stay up to date with market practices and social and environmental issues. Continually improving and refining the standards of the BIA is a crucial component in our shared mission to help companies measure what matters and to certify top performers as B Corporations. But we need your help!

What's changed:

In this assessment update cycle, B Lab has narrowed its content changes to fixing broken and missing indicators in an effort to create more continuity between versions. Several notable changes proposed for Version 5 include:

• Improved employee best practices applicable for global developed markets
• Expanded Health Impact Business Model to more accurately differentiate the significance of health issues being addressed and different types of solutions
• Updated Supply Chain Impact Business Model to accommodate different fair trade standards and direct trade practices
• Greater acknowledgement of companies that have home or virtual offices
• Re-classification of service companies with significant operational impacts, such as construction, hospitality companies, etc., in order to recognize materiality of their environmental impact.
• Recognition of Sharing Economy business models that can verify reductions in consumption
• Best practices for interns programs and use of independent contractors

The B Impact Assessment is developed and managed by B Lab with oversight from an independent Standards Advisory Council composed of stakeholder representatives and impact experts. The Standards Advisory Council oversees and approves all content in the assessment and adjudicates any rebuttals regarding interpretation of the assessment. Following the conclusion of the public comment period. comments will be reviewed and necessary revisions made in anticipation of a January 2016 launch. The draft is currently only available in English.

Please reach out to dosusky@bcorporation.net with any questions or comments about the process. For all companies to compete to be best for the world, it is essential for the B Impact Assessment to collect diverse perspectives and different stakeholder groups, so we thank you for your feedback and contribution to the movement to use business as a force for good.
